LANDSCAPE OF DOE CRAG FROM THE WALNA SCAR ROAD, CUMBERLAND. INSCRIBED VERSO PETTITT, KESWICK 1874

A landscape pastoral scene of a shepherd and a flock of sheep crossing a typical Lakeland packhorse bridge on the Walna Scar road with Doe Crags in the background (a scene which remains largely unaltered). The canvas is signed and inscribed, verso, ‘Pettitt, Keswick 1874’, probably by Edwin Alfred Pettitt (1840 – 1912). The treatment of the water cascading along this mountain stream and the boulders in the foreground being typical of a number of his more extensive works. Oil on canvas

Edwin Alfred Pettitt was an English landscape painter born in Birmingham. He lived with his family in Cumberland for several years between the early 1850’s (in Cockermouth) and the 1870’s when he was recorded as living in Keswick in the 1871 census. Painting in oil on canvas, he specialised in the rugged mountain scenery of the Lake District, Scotland and Wales and remains well exhibited in numerous English museums and public gallerys.
