A FINE AND RARE BRASS AND BLACKENED IRON GEORGIAN NEO-CLASSICAL DOG GRATE, IN THE STYLE OF ROBERT ADAM
This important George III grate is fashioned in brass and blackened iron with finely etched and engraved foliate and acanthus designs and applied beading, a skirt of lozenge cut paterae, vase shaped finials and chamfered etched legs; very much in the neo-classical style and clearly showing the influence of Robert Adam (1728-1792).
A similar grate, in steel, is displayed at the V&A Musuem, London which has been attributed to the iron founder Henry Jackson of Saffron Hill, Smithfield, and there are two further similar grates in Spencer House (built 1756-1766), St. Jame’s, London.
