A BUST LENGTH PORTRAIT OF OLIVER CROMWELL IN ARMOUR

OIL ON CANVAS, AFTER ROBERT WALKER (British, 1607–1658)

An 18th century? bust length portrait of Oliver Cromwell (1599 – 1658) Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland amd Ireland.

Oil on canvas depicting Cromwell in a plain lace collar and Greenwich-type armour the use of which had declined in battle by the late 16th century but, rather, was designed here to be symbolic of his miltary command and chivalric virtues.

Cromwell was a Parliamentary commander leading successful campaigns in England, Scotland and Ireland in the British Civil Wars before later becoming Lord Protector in 1653.
