A CAPRICCIO OF A RUINED CLASSICAL PORT

An 18th century oil on canvas depicting a port with ruined classical buildings of the Corinthian and Ionic orders to the right and a fortified Renassiance harbour building to the left.  An Indiaman in full sail leaving port, a rowing boat with two gentlemen being rowed by four sailors. A futher two small boats in the harbour. Figures in discourse on the steps of the ruins, one pointing towards the interior. 

The imaginery scene represents a typical mid-18th century capriccio depicting classical architectural ruins within a seaport setting and is based on a series of scenes depicting embarkations and disembarkations from classical seaports painted by Claude Lorrain (Gellée) between c.1639-1648 including Seaport with the Embarkation of Saint Ursula; Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba from The Bouillon Claudes; Embarkation of St. Paul at Ostia; The Disembarkation of Cleopatra at Tarsus
