PASTORAL LANDSCAPE OF CATTLE WATERING AT A STREAM
JAMES PARDON (fl. c.1800 – 1850)
An early 19th century pastoral landscape painting depicting a herd of cattle watering at a stream in rolling countryside. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821, No. 441, described as ‘a landscape.’ Oil on canvas.
A similar work by James Pardon (c.1792 – 1862), entitled, ‘Canterbury, Kent, from St Stephen’s’ (1819) is held at Canterbury Museums and Galleries after its acquisition from Sotheby’s in 1987 with the assistance of the Victoria and Albert Museum Grant Fund. A further work, ‘Cattle at Buildwas Abbey, Shropshire’ (1841) is held at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.
James Pardon studied at the Royal Academy Schools and built a reputation as an accomplished portrait painter, exhibiting several paintings, mainly portraits, at the Royal Academy over 50 years.
